 Sun and Venus are exactly conjunct today. In Jyotish terms this is a complete combustion of Shukra, the Sanskrit name for Venus.
A combustion means that the Planet is on the far side of its orbit as seen from the Earth and it hides behind the glare of the Sun. This decreases the effects of the combust planet on the life on Earth, both negative and positive. On the other hand, a retrograde planet is actually on its near side of its orbit and therefore its negative or positive effects also increase.

Venus is combust due to its proximity to Sun in degrees. Venus becomes half combust when it comes within 15 degrees of Sun and is considered fully combust when it is within 8 degrees of Sun.
As of today, Venus is in transit in Sagittarius (Dhanu) with Rahu, Sun and Mercury. Venus is within 4 degrees of Sun and these two planets will be conjunct on 12th January 2010.
